Meeting the Unique Needs of Newcomers in the Classroom
Saturday October 26, 2024 9:45am - 11:30am PDT
California’s newly arrived students bring with them a unique set of cultural, social, and academic needs. This workshop, tailored for K-12 educators, will provide an introduction to who these newcomers are, highlighting their diverse backgrounds and specific challenges. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding the differences between Students with Limited and/or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE) and Students with Adequate or Ample Formal Education (SAFE), and how these differences impact classroom instruction. The session will then shift to addressing their academic needs, focusing on strategies to help both groups thrive in the classroom and beyond. Participants will walk away equipped with practical tools, resources, and strategies to create a welcoming environment and support the learning and growth of all newcomer students.
